I went to the Florissant Valley campus of the St. Louis Community College. It was a great way to stay at home and get 2 years of college out of the way before I transfered to the state university. They have good communications and programs with the state university so that you do not lose any credits in your transfer.
The cost was very reasonable 20 years ago and still is (as my mother actually was taking spanish recently at the campus) to this date. I believe that 15 credit hours in a semester can still have a cost of about 3000 USD with books.
There are no dorms as it is really designed as a community college.
It is a great place to get some of the classes completed that in the main university they might use as a weed out (high failure rates) course. The teachers are of multiple backgrounds. Some are only teachers at the university and some actually are professionals outside the university and only teach at night. The campus is actually very nice looking and is just off the main highway so there is easy access.
For those that live in the area, it has many nicknames: Drive-thru U, Crayola Tech, Havard on the Highway, etc...
