True the devastation was immeasurable and best guesses are all they have, but it proves that knowledge does grant power and can be used for the betterment of mankkind.
Lack of hygiene still remains one of the main reasons there is still modern back plagues today. Once of the main reasons the plague spread back then was all the commerce that involved crates and bags of goods stored to sell and distribute. As they did so it was like passing on the disease.
