Is it true that if one were to take a spaceship through a Wormhole they would end up in a different part of the Universe that could not be reached by any other method?

I have seen two thoughts on that one thought is that the worm hole is actually a portal from one universe to another and that time and space are warped to allowed it. That is a crazy tube that is one inch long connecting Trinidad to Canada. Thus yes you can travel there also using the long method. It is also argued that that is not the only worm hole type but a second type exists that connect parallel dimensions also, thus the only passage to it though to cross the point of singularity would ultimately mean death.
