I found the entire article fascinating! I know my dog understands my son's name, my grandson's name, he knows what he crate/cage is along with other expressions. There is no doubt to his understanding certain terms that I use. Now, there is scientific evidence to prove I am not crazy!

I have a golden retriever, and he can distinguish between his ball, his bone and his kong (its a tough rubber toy) He also knows the kids name, because we will ask him where they are and he will look for them and even go to their rooms sometimes. He now has to share toys since we have the new baby. I recently bought my son a rubber ball, and we repeatedly told the golden this toy was for the baby. He wasnt too thrilled about it, but hasnt attempted to play with it since, and his toys are usually strewn about the floor intermingled with the baby's. We are impressed that he keeps to his toys and stays away from the baby's.

We have a Goldon Retreiver as well and I can vouch for his understanding. He's getting old now and hard of hearing, but we had to resort to spelling some words if we didnt want him to eavesdrop. He used to go crazy when we mentioned the word walk. He loves to go for walks. We had to start spelling it out w-a-l-k so he wouldnt go crazy with excitement. After a while, he began to associate the spelling of the word as well. He understands everybody's name in the family and knows what Grandma's house means. It means he gets to go for a ride and swim in her pool. I do believe dogs understand a lot.

How about this for smart! I had laryngitis Sunday and Monday. I couldn't raise my voice above a whisper. I let my dog outside and was in the yard with him. I called for him to come in. He turned looked at me, I called him again, he heard me, but he knew I couldn't raise my voice so he just ignored me. I know he was ignoring me because everytime I called his name he looked up at me, then I would gesture for him to come and call him in the same voice that I used to call his name. He just looked at me and went back to what he was doing. I had to send my son out to "yell" at him for not listening to me. He skampered back in the house with that look dogs get when they know they have done something wrong!

I remember teaching my English Bulldog to "speak" -- I was having a popsicle, and he was drooling, his eyes pinned on that thing. I kept telling him to "speak," while I made extreme yummy noises over that popsicle. He finally barked a polite little bark, I'm sure just to get my attention. I said, "Good boy! Speak!" and gave him a piece of popsicle. I swear I *saw* it click in his mind. From then on, that dog knew exactly what "speak" meant, and as soon as I would get a popsicle from the fridge, he would give that polite little bark.

Oh yes, my dog is very smart. Last week, I slacked a little on my dogs mealtime. I always glance at his water to make sure he has plenty, but if his dog food dish is low, I won't bother if I'm short on time and trying to get out of the house. It won't hurt him, he's a little too fat anyway. I'm always the one that feeds him, I guess my family doesn't notice an empty dog dish. Anyway, I arrived home after several hours of being at work. My family was asleep because I work nights. My dog greeted me enthusiastically, as he always does. He then went to his dog dish, picked up a piece of dog food, walked up to me and dropped it at my feet. He then looked up at me and stared at me. Was that obvious enough? When I went to his dog dish to investigate, I found he had brought me his last piece of dog food. He had saved it, to get his point across. I was amazed he was smart enough to do that and he was smart enough to know who to present it to! Good dog!

I have a yellow lab and he's amazing. He too knows family names, knows crate means get your body back into the apartment and into the crate and also knows what I'm going to say when he does something he knows he shouldn't. Like torment the kitty. He's funny as all get out and he must be on a higher spiritual plane as well. I'll have other LDS over at my house and when they pull up, he doesn't bark. It's not because he knows them, because he barks at my parents' car and friends' cars and such. But, when a total stranger comes up to the house and happens to be one of my LDS friends, he doesn't bark. That makes me wonder sometimes!

My 7 year old German shepherd mix knows like... six different commands for sit (sit, put your butt down, *cough*, "HEY!", snapping fingers and palm down to palm up.... every so often an annoyed facial expression also works), four for lie down (lie down or down, snap, point to the ground, and palm heading for the ground), and a bunch of tricks which include dance, speak, shake a paw, high five, low five, sit pretty, play dead, on your side and every so often he decides he knows 'roll over'.

For food he is always surprised when it's served early, and always tries to con for more five minutes after he's finished his meal (it actually works every so often). He knows what 'w-a-l-k' means, and begs me to take him for a walk every time I leave the house when the cars are gone because he knows I'm going to the horses. Oh and this year he finally decided that riding in the back of a truck is a fun thing to do. We started training at 6 months old and gave up after he repeatedly lost enough fur to cover three dogs his size.

And as all dogs do, he knows when he's done something bad... such as dig a hole or make a mess in his pen.

So yes, I've always believed that dogs are superbly intelligent, more so than most people often give them credit for... and that cats are just as intelligent, or more so... they're just better at hiding it.
