It helps me express my emotions. When I talk, I hide my emotions out of fear of them being used against me(that has happaned often), so I use writing as a license to express my emotions).
However, I do express my emotions to people who I am very friendly with(which are a few).
Writing is an outlet for things that I can't put into words verbally, or that I don't wish to discuss with others. My personal journal, for instance, is different from my public blog, in that it contains more intimate details of my family and my life that I wouldn't want to display to the world.
The RPG writing that I do occasionally here is just *fun* to do; it's very much like acting in an improvisational play. Other fiction I write (or used to - who has time anymore? ) is also fun, but at times like a psychological puzzle to solve. Making sure a character behaves in a specific way that stays true to their personality and profile as set up in an outline, for instance.
And finally, voicing my opinions in writing on forums and elsewhere helps me to focus and refine how I state my personal beliefs.
I love writing - can you tell?

I like to read and although I try my best to visualize what is taking place I still see myself as most definitely an observer of it all. There are those who can become one with the character, especially the anti-hero, but that's not me.
