How fast can you type? Is it something you can continue to do for half an hour or do you stop after ten minutes at full speed? What is the secret to typing speeds?

Barbara Blackburn has her story which can be read here.

150 words per minute and hold that speed for 50 minutes. That is a total of 37,500 keystrokes.

If that is not impressive enough her top speed measured is 212 words per minute.

Could you image her nearly did not graduate high school over her typing class?

I've never seen a Dvorak keyboard, but it seems it would offer some advantage. For me, learning a new keyboard would actually slow me down. Either way, she has an amazing story to tell.

Offtopic but, As for speed writing, my wife is learning short-hand right now, for her court reporting degree. At the end she will need to take a test at 200 or so words per minute or so. Of course they use that special steno machine, but still, that is pretty fast.

At this stage of my life, I would have a really hard time learning another keyboard, although I did at one time attend court reporting school and learned the steno machine well enough. Ms. Blackburn was very fortunate to have found her DSK alternative early in life!

I have found that I can actually type faster on an ergonomic keyboard. I have a little problem when it comes to the sixes because you have to use your right index finger when I use my left normally to hit the six. But since I am more relaxed, it allows me to get a better flow. I have tried using the Dvorak keyboard but I find it very difficult to switch to another keyboard when I have been typing on a standard for so long. In fact, I have never used any other kind. My mother is an executive assistant and she has to do allot of typing, she uses a dvorak keyboard as well. She said they taught it to her in college. She went to college late, but I don't remember that being even brought up when I went to college.

Same here. That is a very interesting story. I think I, too, would have a very hard time learning a new keyboard, but it seems to help one type faster. It makes me wonder why it's not more commonly used. I input the US mail from images for a living. The keyboard setup is slightly modified, with the numbers being on the middle row, because of the frequency of their being used. I can type about 80 wpm, consistently. The secret is practice. Do enough of it, and it becomes second nature without any thought required.

I think that all computers can remap the keyboards to Dvorak, so if you once learn how to use it, you can then use it all the time. If you have to do a lot of typing, then this would probably be a good idea.

However, I think that most of us now do a lot of typing in short pieces. As an engineer, I rarely write more than a paragraph or two at a time. In fact, I probably write about 10 times as much on the forum as I do at work.

I had to take a typing test the other day for a job interview and you had to type at least 45 wpm. I ended up testing out at 72 wpm. I don't know how long I can sustain that accurately, because that was the thing. It didn't matter how many wpm you typed if they weren't accurate. Apparently, mine was pretty impressive. Now we'll just cross our fingers (when we're not using them to type:laughs:) And see if I get the job!

With a typing speed as of hers, I was just having the thought of how many posts she could crank out on this forum within an hour. Of course there is the reading factor involved in that but my gosh. She could potentially blow everyone's post counts out of the water in a relatively short time.
