Alternative Evolutionary Timeline

Many sci-fi shows have as its' theme the concept of an alternative evolutionary timeline or in other words... if man evolved from apes to what we are today, then why not, on some distant planet out there have lizards evolve, or insects, etc. Do you think this is possible or is this earth and our current state of affairs highly unique and unlike any other.

Nah, I don't think so. This is only sci-fiction, I cannot believe such a thing at all. It is silly in my humble opinion.

I don't buy the whole "humans evolved from apes" theory. If we evolved from apes, then why aren't there ape-like humanoids? Why isn't the evolution continuing?

I think the idea we evoved from apes is incorrect. As reptiles were around long before mammals, I think it's possible that both humans and apes evolved from reptiles. Yes, I can see everbody rolling their eyes but consider this:look at the skeletal similarities between reptiles(lizards etc) and humans. Both have the same features(five fingers, tailbone). Just take a look at the top of your hand. Could it not be said that the lines resemble scales?. What happens when you get sunburnt- you shed your skin like a reptile(funny thing is this does not occur with apes). Maybe their looking for the missing link in the wrong place?

Mr. Wong, I disagree with you. I think most of the animal creations have hands, feet, a head, eyes, etc. The reptiles are not the exception and I don't personally see the similarities with the human being. To be quiet honest I think they are very very different to us.

If you look at evolution you see that it continues today. However, there are no examples of one species evolving into another. So, doubt we evolved from apes. That doesn't mean to me that other planets can't be inhabited, but I don't think it will be a case of a lizard evolving into a humanoid or a human into an ape.

I think it's just bizarre that the whole Theory of Evolution is taught as FACT in our schools! I do believe that creatures (including humans) can adapt and evolve to facilitate life in extreme circumstances, but I cannot believe that the complex nature of any creature evolved from some other creature. Nor do I believe that given similar conditions as our Earth began, that some other creature "evolved" on some other planet.

In my opinion, of course.

The story of Planet of the Apes was that he journeyed to the future on Earth, not another planet. If you saw Planet of the Apes, you'll remember he saw the statue of liberty sunk in the sea.

There is a theory that there are an infity of universes parallel to our own. If that is true, there might be a planet just like ours. And even if there's only one universe, it can be that a certain planet has similar conditions, since the general requirements for life are very narrow, and if a form of life evolves, it is bound to be similar to ours'

What do you mean? Humans do look very much like apes. And the evolution is continuing- you just don't see it, because it takes millions of years. Evolution is just survival of the fittest. The ones who are more fit make more children, therefore their genes will go on to the next generation. So let's say there were some apes who were a bit smarter than others. They managed to survive better, and produced children. Out of their children, a few were above the standard of their father, and a few beneath. Again, the ones with more intelligence survived, and had children. This continues until they developed to our state today.

There actually are. Not so long ago, a species of dwarfs were discovered on an island at Indonesia (not living, of course. They found their skulls.) They're another species, but they had evolved from us. There were also dwarf elephants found there.
