How many of you have actually been to the museum lately? If you have, you know that museum directors are hardly a good judge of what most of us consider art. And a statue is indeed art, in this case, its art imitating art imitating life. Its a great statue to be put at the only place it belongs, on the steps of the museum, a museum he made famous.
I don't know. First of all, it wasn't the museum director that said it wasn't art. Second... Why do you say museum directors don't know about art (not to say that I always agree with museum directors, art comissions, critics, etc.)?
As for the statue, I would say that is a representation of pop culture first before it is a work of art. Perhaps this is the reason that the city's art commission does not want it in prominent view outside of this museum. Perhaps they would rather the museum be beautiful/famous on other merits before the merits of a pop icon, or in other words, they would rather not have the museum represented by this particular icon only, as placing it in such a prominent place would suggest. I do agree that movies are art, and this statue is art. But who even created this statue? They don't even mention an artist in the article, perhaps another reason for the art comissions rejection.
