Looks nice, but does it really need to or is this part of an actual feature to make the satellite function better?

QUOTE
Goce's striking good-looks are a requirement of the extremely testing environment in which it will have to operate.

The arrow shape and fins are necessary to keep the spacecraft stable as it flies through the wisps of air still present at an altitude just under 270km.

It would seem the sleek design is engineered to account for the abnormalities in the earth gravitational pull. So the design will keep it in this very low orbit with out falling.

I think we will get some very valuable information here. Perhaps even being able to sense volcanic or other under ground activity. That is a very sensitive sensor!

I believe the information that this satellite tells us will help us in understanding more about our world. It will also help us when we make it to other worlds and help us ;pick a good stable sight for the first base on that planet.

That is a good point as a large land mass will likely have similar traits if close to the same mass and distance from a star. Projection likely could be made to account for a large mass or being a different distance from the sun.
