Home-schooling ruling could affect thousands
After treating patients for 15 years, Kathy Adams Morgan hung up her stethoscope to educate her daughter full time at their Point Loma home. Eight years later, Morgan has no regrets. It's easy to see why. At 13, Jenny scores high on standardized tests and balances academics with organized sports, Girl Scouts, dance - and the ever-important teenage social life.

Leave it to California to put a big monkey wrench into a system that has been working very well for a long time. IF a person chooses to home school their children then they should be allowed. You do not pass a year in home schooling without taking a standards test that is administered by a paid school official. That make sure that a home schooled child gets the education that is equal to those in their age group. So they can become graduated when they are 18. Just like any other child in the public system. Now this can all come crashing down thanks to a couple of judges.
Since when parents do not have a right to teach their own kids? Nobody can tell me I do not have the right to educate my own child at home. I think this is beyond ridiculous.
The big concern is what level of teaching is the child receiving? I think parents should be allowed to teach their children if they want, but there should also be a guideance counselor appointed to ensure the parents are in fact teaching and not getting their children to do slave labor or to be tortured (remember that recent case with the zealot JW?).
One should be able to home school fi they have that talent but yes the government should be allowed to prove the parent is dong what they should in that yes they are teaching and that all required materials are being covered.

Now LDS_forever do you expect any thing less then that from a government official? It is the same way here a friend of ours took their boy out for two years, due to bullying issues. She had to repeatedly pester the school board to just get him to write the required tests for re-entry to the system. She is putting him back in the system again now that they has given him time to mature more. He does have social disorder and is doing better now.
