The excuse of the teacher is that he was just "joking" (which it doesn't seem to me at all). Also, it is NOT the first time he does it. It is interesting also that some parents support his methods. In one of the papers, it reads "20% for being a loser" and the word loser underlined.
I think this guy should have his teaching license revoked. Middle school is hard enough the kids do not need this added stress on them. I believe this teacher is not only harassing students but also causing a very hostile place for any student he has called a loser.

Comments: It's hard to believe this teacher couldn't find some better way to "relate to his students". I know that middle schoolers can be a hard group to get to know and to get respect from, but you command respect, not demand it! I agree with the writer who said that the ages of middle school kids are a time that has enough turmoil in it already....the last thing a middle school kid needs is to have someone that they should be able to trust and admire treating them as poorly as this teacher is treating this student. I can't think of any reason for any teacher to call any kid a loser! It is simply not funny, not necessary, and just plain rude. Besides all of that, the teacher is teaching that student something very derogatory...how to feel shame and low self-esteem!
