Carbon Dating?

Do you think carbon dating is really an accurate science? Some believe that it cannot be correct because of the period of time most religious and scholarly people give for certain events.

Carbon dating can be used on material which was living in the last few tens of thousands of years, and which got its carbon from the air. The method has become more accurate in the last few decades.

Neo,

The article for which you provided the link seemed quite fair and balanced, although I was disappointed in exploring the link to the "dating service" at the end. wink.gif

Radiocarbon dating relies on a lot of assumptions. The main being that C-14's concentration (in the atmosphere) has always been constant. Evidence, alas, suggests this is not the case.

Past temperature changes in the oceans (which absorb CO2 and thus affect C-14 concentration) would, for instance, throw out radiocarbon dating's accuracy. As would volcanic activity.

QUOTE
"Radiometric techniques work - assuming no daughter elements existed in the original specimens, assuming no leaching or contamination has occurred, and, in the case of carbon dating, assuming atmospheric carbon ratios have never changed. Belief in these methods, and in an old Earth, requires a degree of faith." (James Perlof, Tornado in a Junkyard: The Relentless Myth of Darwinism, p 149)

There are too many assumptions for my liking.

Dubhdara.

No I don't believe Carbon Dating is accurate. Yes I think the main reasons are because the bible has no room for millions of years. But another reason is that when carbon dating was used on fossils that are known to be not very old, it still tests them as millions of years old. That to me is enough evidance to take down this method of dating.

Radio carbon dating is the closest and most accurate thing we have for dating objects at this time. It has shown to be very accurate as of late, correctly dating objects of known age. The argument that radio carbon dating isn't accurate because the Bible doesn't have room for a million years is not a good argument. It requires you to base scientific principle on faith, not reason. Science based on faith leads to superstitious cures for illness and beliefs in illogical elemental make ups the likes of Aristotles imaginations. Science has found that radio carbon dating is the best we have. Is it perfect? No. But it is accurate enough to be used to date things within a reasonable amount of time to its real origins.

Dating Carbon

Carbon 14 dating is the most precise way to determine the age of biological matter in our present days. I once read that energy cosmic rays will be the replacement for dating matter. Studying thermo/radioactive traces in matter couldbe a more accurate way to determine the precise age of things.
The thermomaps that have been researched for explaning the Big Bang process in a new theory known as Inflation Status of Universe will be the starting area and comparison model, setting arbitrary units etc...
The world is changing so science does with these new branches of exploration and observation.

As far as my understanding of it goes - this has a long way to go when it comes to pin pointing a date beyond a thousand years? There seems to be a lot of argument over dates that warrants an improvement of technology?
