Tire Shelf Life

Did you know that Tires have a Shelf Life? Some tires can sit on a shelf for years before being sold to a customer. Therefore when you think you are buying a new tire you may be being a tire that is four to as much as ten years old! Do you know how to check the tire's expiry date? That is right, it is not on the tire is it! Well it is, but it is coded. In the US if you see a tire with code: 231 it means the tire was made in the 23 week of the year 2001.

Comments: Unless I am mistaken, the example you give would mean that the tire was manufactured in the 23rd week of 1991. The 23rd week of 2001 would be designated as 2301. The new tires on my truck are coded as 4307 for example. See:

This is good news to know if I go to a tire dealer. The tires on my car need changed out soon. I will use this info when I replace them.

Well, based on what we are getting out of this Thread looks like you bought some tires from 2002.

I guess the real question even though the tire sits at what is it deteriorating or if it is at all.

After some deep browsing and reading I am getting the idea that a year if exposed to sun light is a good limit to use. It seems this is when dealers will put the tire on sale to get it out of their stock. One can buy sprays to soften the rubber as well.

I think a bigger issue is ensuring you keep your tire pressure up to prevent tire fatigue.

QUOTE (cbs news)

In the meantime, you can check your own tire's age by finding the four digits of the tire's "DOT" number if the tire was made in 2000 or after.

The first two digits correspond to the week the tire was manufactured; the last two would be the year.

On older tires, there are only three digits. Just look at the last number: a "9" means the tire was born in 1999.

So might be a good idea to check this and it is usually located on the sidewall facing the cars undercarriage....have to ponder on that.

Comments: The tires on our 1999 74i Sport BMW seem to be very old according to the repair shop. They vibrate at 55 MPH even though we bought them "new." There is no DOT #. The only # I can find on the interior sidewalls is 028875. The exterior sidewall Reads T-undecipherable numerical digits and the #4185. I have been told they are Goodyear F-1 Eagle. Can you tell me anything about these tires?

I would suggest going to another shop to make sure. Also vibrations could be out of balance on the wheel or rims. IS it only at 55 or does it get worse there after.
