The Right To Commit Suicide

As a human if you decide to kill yourself why does the law get involved? Don't you have the RIGHT to end your own life as an independent human being?

No as at present it is still a federal law that forbids it as well as it is against many religious belief systems.

Second why should ones life be so miserable as to wish death aside from terminal disease. Also it could mean financial hardship on those left behind.

We are accountable to our families and as such we should not commit such acts. Cowardice is no reason to hide from life, all problems have a solution even it is just accepting that we are mortal and hove no control over our time alive.

I believe that as humans we have the right to do as we want. Mans laws will never take the place of gods laws. God forbids us to take our own lives. IF you wish to go against God's law then be my guest. I do not want to be you when you reach judgement with the all mighty.

There is also the loved ones you leave behind. I have gone to several suicide scenes. I have yet to go to one where there is no one crying or upset because their loved one killed themselves. I wish some could see the anguish they have left behind. Life is short enough we do not need to make it shorter.

Over 80% of the patients I see are suicidal. Of that 80% I would estimate at least 98% do not really want to die. Once they are stabilized and/or no longer under the influence of drugs or alcohol and can think straighter they realize they want to live. They just want the pain (either physical or emotional) to go away. They are almost always glad they were unsuccessful in completing the suicide. The exceptions are those with terminal diseases. And not all of those would really choose to die if given a choice.
Suicide is a final solution that does not solve anything. In most societies life is still highly valued and as such should be preserved if at all possible.

I can understand that Alskann. Most of the suicides I went to were drug or alcohol related. They needed the drugs or alcohol to be able to get past their self preservation reflex to be able to jump off that water tower or to use the shot gun on the side of their head.

I feel life is very precious and something not to be wasted. I will do all I can to keep someone from taking their own life. I feel that most of the people who want to take their life just needs someone to talk to or to help them get the help they really need.

You are very right it is depression and then having some one to stand with them as they cleanup and get going again. It is just as hard to help I find as to be the one cleaning up their act and getting straightened out.

I don't really know whether I agree if you should have your own right to commit suicide or not, but I don't agree with the fact that anybody who attempts suicide should then have to be admitted to Psychiatric care- I'm not sure that everybody who attempts suicide is necessarily mentally unstable!

You have my full support on that one. It would sure make my job a lot easier. If anyone even mentions they want to kill themselves or someone else the powers that be want to send them here. Sometimes they are successful. We get patients who do not need to be here but because they said "I want to kill myself," here they are. It is a lot harder to get them out once they are here. It is stressful to them and their family. It is a burden on the taxpayers who pay for their care. And it detracts care and attention away from those patients who really do need to be hospitalized. And it takes up bed space that is at a premium already. For the past three months we have been on waitlist status. Many of those could be screened out and open up beds for the acutely ill that need them.
