I Don't Talk To Strangers

I took Felipe out to a play area today. I'm hearing a lot of improvement in his speech and communication with other children, however I was most happy to hear him say to one of the other fathers there: "I Don't Talk To Strangers" when the father asked him what his name was! This may not be a big deal for a lot of you, but it has taken about a year for this to finally register with Felipe!

I have a 13 year old now who had a hard time with that concept as well. His older brother saved him one day because he went up to a total stranger and asked for a ride home. His brother pulled him backwards and told him you do not ask strangers for a ride. I am glad that yours has learned this hard to teach lesson.

Yes, afterwards we were walking to another destination and he asked me if I was happy because he said that he does not talk to strangers and I replied that I was very happy. The key here is I hope he remembers to do it every time and not just because it makes me happy, but that he understands that its a safety issue. I notice special needs children seem to have a lower sense of danger or possible danger. They see most everyone as a friend until it is too late.

That's why they are easy "prey" for pedophiles and criminals in general. I notice a great improvement in his understanding when we took him in the park and one of the kids wanted to play a game and was explaining to him how to play it and he understood everything. I was very glad.

The safety issue always concerns me, hence I am always around to make sure nobody approaches him or he talks to strangers.
