How Many Books?

I understand that as a member of LDS there are books other than the Bible such as the Book of Mormon that are considered scripture.

How many books are actually referenced in the LDS faith?
What are all of these books?
What do they each contain?

Books How

We use the King James version of the Bible. along with this we use:

1. The Book of Mormon which talks about the visit of Jesus Christ to the ancient Indians in the Western Hemisphere.

2. The Doctrine & Covenants - revelations give to Joseph Smith to establish the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

3. The Pearl of Great Price - some ancient facsimiles and scrolls that were translated by Joseph Smith. Within these are the lost books of Moses and Abraham. It also contains the account of Joseph Smith's first interaction with God and His Son.

I believe Latter Day Saints believe that the Cannon is never officially closed. The LDS church declares that God reveals doctrines to his people through Prophets, not unlike he did in all dispensations where Prophets were found, through-out history.

So we believe that God's has the option to give his people direction and revelation if he deems it necessary.

We believe that the doctrines found in The Bible, The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price are all doctrines that God has revealed to Prophets in the past (Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses etc.) but have been lost because of mistranslation of ancient texts or the deliberate rejection of them by some well meaning men and others who were not so well meaning, who took sacred doctrines out of the holy writ because they felt uncomfortable with the teachings.

We see this today with the Holy Bible. How many time have we seen intellectuals try to take out or reinterpret uncomfortable doctrines out of the Bible concerning the righteous vengeance of God in the Old testament and the condemnation of adultery (lusting after a Woman) in the New Testament.

We Believe the Bible to be the word of God, but we claim that God is not limited to revealing his truth to only a past dispensation. God can and will reveal his truths to all righteous men in all dispensation of time. Whatever dispensation within which they are received are written down by Prophets of God (Even if, we believe , a prophet were to receive it today). When received by revelation this becomes scripture when it is written down.

Please remember that this is coming from my my own perspective and beliefs on religion and in no way a condemnation of the faith of others.

I also believe that the bible is not closed but think that LDS have it right in creating more books to contain revelations given to them.

I have a study bible that has many book that were left out of the King James version.

I find it interesting that so many church nay say any book or teaching of Christ that is not in the Bible. So I say keep up the good work so that years down the road Gods wisdom is not lost.

Books How

I do enjoy the reading of the King James version of the bible. I know there are other books out there and I plan to get my hands on a Book of Mormon so I can learn from it too. I want to grow in the way of the scriptures and their meanings so I can be better in my walk with god.
