British Conservative Leader Won't Back Stopping Abortions on Disabled Babies
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- Conservative Party Leader David Cameron has upset pro-life advocates in England with comments saying he will not back an amendment to the embryo bill to scale back abortions on disabled babies. MPs are expected to vote on a proposal to change the rule that allows abortions as late as 39 weeks if the unborn child is diagnosed with a disability. But Mr Cameron said: "I won't be supporting that. The current law should remain." However, he pledged to vote to reduce the abortion limit for healthy babies to 20 weeks from the current 24. The issues raised by the legislation are sensitive ones for Mr Cameron because his five-year-old son Ivan was born with a severe form of cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Brown also said he would vote for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill even though it allows for human cloning. "Generally my approach is I want to improve the process of dealing with the genetic defects and diseases that cause so much suffering," he said. "When you have been for genetic counseling and had the answer it could be this or that it could be that, the idea of medical science advancing is not without its attractions."

Comments: As the father of a little boy who suffered profound brain injuries, who sadly passed away four years ago, I find Mr Cameron's views to be nothing short of monstrous.

There are several important points where Mr Cameron's argument is weak; - they are as follows.

* This position presumes that people with disabilities are lesser human beings with fewer human rights than the rest of us. Mr Cameron's view would mean effectively that these 'lesser human beings' could simply be 'put down.' What kind of 'master race' mentality is this?

* Although I agree that if it can be independently determined that a child is going to spend a life of pain and suffering, occasionally, this might be the correct solution, the question is, can we accurately determine this? Medical people have a nasty habit of making mistakes, that is how many childhood disability issues are caused, (Shall we terminate doctors who make these errors perhaps?), so are they to be relied upon to make an accurate judgment of a child's future? I think not.

* Quality of life is a subjective measure. What might seem to be an unacceptable quality of life to you or me, might have a completely different perspective from the point of view of the person whose life it is! Who is qualified to judge? - Certainly not I!

* Mr Cameron's proposal that disabled children could be aborted as late as thirty-nine weeks is simply monstrous and is tantamount to cold blooded murder.

I am the founder of a child development consultancy called 'Snowdrop,' which treats children with a wide variety of developmental disabilities. I am privileged to be closer to many families and children who deal with such problems on a daily basis. Despite this personal experience and knowledge I would never presume to be qualified enough to make a judgment about a child's quality of life.

All life is sacred. All people, no matter what difficulties they face, are valuable human beings. We cannot utilize our own subjective judgments to determine which people are allowed to survive and which people are not.

Rick Santorum: Disabled Children Have So Much to Teach Us

Some said it was the best pro-life speech they had ever heard. Fresh from the Presidential campaign trail, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum this week delivered an eloquent, emotional explanation of his pro-life journey during the 2011 Celebrate Life Banquet sponsored by the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Education Fund.

In Mars, PA, Santorum weaved together vignettes from his personal and professional lives to show how he became a champion of the pro-life cause-a cause he initially shied away from.

Santorum's first real public foray into the hot-button abortion issue came during the Capitol Hill debate on the outrageous practice of partial-birth abortion. His defense of innocent human life during that discussion would earn him the title "ultra-conservative" in a Blue State known for electing pro-abortion Republicans.

Santorum's awe-inspiring speech decrying partial-birth abortion saved at least one life, as a woman who had scheduled an abortion decided to cancel it when she saw his impassioned plea on television.

During his recent Pennsylvania appearance, Santorum recalled the crisis of faith he experienced when his wife Karen went to get an ultrasound of their unborn baby Gabriel.

The doctor told the couple, "Your son has a fatal defect and is going to die." But Gabriel was born alive. Ref. Source 8

Writer: Moms Who Birth Disabled Babies are "Insentient Incubators" Who "Give Birth to a Corpse"

Know anyone who has given birth to a baby with severe disabilities? Parents of such children already face tremendous pressure from doctors, friends and family, and society to have an abortion when confronted with a possible diagnosis of an unborn children with terrible medical problems.

Many parents, and courageous mothers, give birth to such children. Sometimes the diagnosis turns out to be completely mistaken and beautiful healthy children are born who otherwise would have been victimized by abortion. On other occasions, mothers give birth to babies who may not survive long - but who unconditionally love them nonetheless. Ref. Source 1
