Oppositional Defiant Disorder & ADHD

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a psychiatric behavior disorder that is characterized by aggressiveness and a tendency to purposefully bother and irritate others. These behaviors cause significant difficulties with family and friends and at school or work.

Oppositional defiant children show a consistent pattern of refusing to follow commands or requests by adults. These children repeatedly lose their temper, argue with adults, and refuse to comply with rules and directions. They are easily annoyed and blame others for their mistakes. Children with ODD show a pattern of stubbornness and frequently test limits, even in early childhood.

This description sounds just like my son Felipe. Actually 50-65% of ODD children also have ADD/ADHD and other disabilities. Source 2

Hmm, this sounds like my Son too, I just took part in the online screen test, which states that if your child displays 4 or more of the symptoms, they may have ODD. My Son displays 7 out of the 8!
Thanks for the information LDS, the timing is good, as he goes to see a specialist on Friday, so I will be mentioning it to her, as I have never heard of it before.

We already attend regular parenting classes for children with behavioral problems, as I am a firm believer that you can never have enough information! These classes are sometimes helpful, sometimes not, but at least they keep our brains active, and we get to meet other parents facing similar situations.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder & ADHD Health & Special Psychology

Felipe is showing more symptoms of ODD and ADHD and I am very concerned about it. We are having an appointment with the psychologist on Thursday to go over the results, let's see what she says. I found some useful information that may help parents dealing with similar conditions:

QUOTE
Causes

There's no clear cause underpinning oppositional defiant disorder. Contributing causes may include:

    * The child's inherent temperament
    * The family's response to the child's style
    * A genetic component that when coupled with certain environmental conditions, such as lack of supervision, poor quality daycare or family instability, increases the risk for ODD
    * A biochemical or neurological factor
    * The child's perception that he or she isn't getting enough of the parent's time and attention.

At home, you can begin chipping away at problem behaviors by practicing the following.

    * Recognize and praise your child's positive behaviors
    * Model the behavior you want your child to have
    * Pick your battles
    * Set limits and enforce consistent reasonable consequences
    * Develop a consistent daily schedule for your child
    * Work with your spouse or others in your household to assure consistent and appropriate discipline procedures
    * Assign your child a household chore that is essential and that won't get done unless the child does it

Coping skills

For yourself, counseling can provide an outlet for your own mental health concerns that could interfere with the successful treatment of your child's symptoms. A depressed or anxious parent may disengage from his or her child, and that can trigger or worsen oppositional behaviors.

    * Learn ways to calm yourself. Keeping your own cool models the behavior you want from your child.
    * Take time for yourself. Develop outside interests, get some exercise and spend some time away from your child to restore your energy.
    * Be forgiving. Let go of things that you or your child did in the past. Start each day with a fresh outlook and a clean slate.

We are experiencing this a lot with our middle and last son now. Our middle son has it badly, however he also has severe development delay and so it is like trying to calm a tantrum of a 2 year old in a 7 year old body - exhausting.

ADHD and Disorder Defiant Oppositional

I have been diagnosed with ADHD, unfortunately it was too late in my teenage years that it was officially diagnosed by a doctor. I wish my parents knew that a bit earlier...

In any case, if anything, parents - please give it your best and run your children through various psychological tests early on. It is very important that the parent understands or even acknowledges the presence of any mental disorders so that they're able to properly counter it.

It is sad how many people tend to think their children have no problem at all, and any misbehavior etc. Is just something temporary.

ODD sounds like a very serious condition that needs proper treatment. Best of luck and my best wishes to anyone going through it.
