Falling Towards Water
I was just wondering what is the maximum height you can safely fall towards water? For instance if you had to bail from a plane over sea without a parachute what would be the maximum height before you take considerable damage from the impact or die.

That is a very good question which I do not know the answer to, but I believe what matters is not the height as much as the velocity or speed at which you hit the water. Probably the angle as well.

Falling Towards Water History & Civil Business Politics

You see people diving off of cliffs and some of them are up there a ways. I know if your jumping from 50 to 60 meters high your probably safe but you should hit feet first. I do know a fall of over 50 feet you reach maximum velocity. So it will depend on the angle of your fall on how much damage you will take. THe exact safe distance is still unknown to me.

How did you get that figure of 50 feet? I was looking for some references, but nothing that gave me the maximum.

I read that in a book once that the human body does not reach maxinum velocity until 51 feet of free fall. Thus if you fell 51 feet or 2000 feet you would still hit the ground at the same speed. I am not sure if it is a true statement as I never verified it. I remember a instructor in the military said the same thing so I would say it is accurate.

We fall at 32 ft/s/s(that is from memory)or 9.8m/s/s. I have found terminal velocity for a human is about 120 mph. That would vary based on the size of the person naturally.

Angle and speed are important to note, as well as if you are hitting freshwater or seawater. Seawater has a higher concentration than freshwater, because of the salt. So when you hit seawater it hurts more than hitting freshwater, given the same speed and angle.

Yes speed and angle is the big issue. Having jumped from as high as 100 ft I will tell you do not mess that up. There were some Korean fellows there they were plunging in from 180 plus ft. It was a cliff in a very deep river just out side of North Bay.

Funny part is I am debating if you plunge from too high manage not to break your neck how deep will you go and how long to get back up. I doubt thought it would be an issue. After all some coral divers go very deep for it.

I will try to set some time aside for this this week. The calc will be basic also to avoid some nasty drag issues and such.
