This is the moral of the new novel by John Burnham Schwartz about a young woman who marries into Japan's Imperial family, not realizing she is trading her freedom for a life of suffocating ritual. The Commoner is based on the current empress, Michiko, who in 1959 became the first commoner to marry into this royal family.
