Do you have blue eyes? What do you think about this latest study?

If you've got blue eyes, shake the hand of the nearest person who shares your azure irises: He or she may be a distant cousin. Danish researchers have concluded that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor, presumably someone who lived 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. "Originally, we all had brown eyes," Professor Hans Eiberg of the University of Copenhagen said in a press release. "But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a 'switch,' which literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes." That "switch" - a simple change from "A," or adenine, to "G," or guanine, in the DNA - actually sits next to the OCA2 gene, which regulates the pigmentation of our eyes, hair and skin, and hence has only a limiting effect on it. If the mutation had completely deactivated OCA2, all blue-eyed people would be albinos. Eiberg and his team analyzed 155 individuals in a large Danish family, plus several blue-eyed people born in Turkey and Jordan.... |
Being of danish descent and having blue eyes I knew that I was related to a lot of people but we all know that we are all related if we go back far enough. Or at least that is what the theory is. I am sure we all can trace our roots quite a ways back if we have the time but to say all blue eyed people are related can be a little off. If the mutation happened in one person who says the mutation could not have happened randomly in another? Thus giving more than one person the chance of bringing blue eyes to masses 6-10 thousand years ago.
What does this mean for someone who has green eyes, or brown eyes or jet black eyes? I'm sure nothing of worth.
I guess it means that the mixture of the blue eyed people with the brown eyed people must have produced a mixture of eye color. Either that or the gene that mutated in the first placed mutated again and again to give us the wide variety of eye color we have today.
I think some one has to much time on their hands and need to get a real job. Research like this is useless since we know just from our history books that our blood lines over lap greatly due to wars, slavery and traveling in the past.
We also know our bodies have adapted over the ages to our environment to ensure survival.
I ponder if they can explain why I had brown eyes for two years before turning turning blue and now hazel. I can even get my eye color to aqua green under the right emotional stimuli. Steel grey/blue when irritated enough, never knew any of this till my wife told me.
Glad to know that Krakyn now we can know your moods by your eyes. Mine are crystal blue when I first wake up then become duller blue though out the day.
You are right about the wars, slavery and other factors causing a completely intermixed species now. Heck my ancestors Raped, pillaged and burned half the known work back in the 8th - 10th century. Many people feared the dragon boats of the vikings. SO it does not surprise me that over time we now have a lot of different eye and hair colors.
