If that is the case, I am really shocked at what a sloppy job he did of getting the money from her. She only won $1k from the table...it wasnt like she turned millions over that night. Now $1k in that part of the world isnt bad money, but it sure pales in comparison to the money he had just extorted and the additional money left on the table in that extortion deal.
So if he was just going to rip her off, then he had to know that soon after he would be wanted by the police. It pretty well wouldnt have mattered if he drugged her and took it, stole it while she was asleep or any other sort of way. She would know it was him and it would have been reported to the police. The only way he would be able to get it and not be reported would have been to charm it out of her. The hotel actually had is real name so there was no way he would be able to escape it. Now if Peruvian Law Enforcement is so lax that even if he was reported that he had little fear of actually ever being caught, that goes in favor if this theory, but I don't know how police work in Peru. So if he actually planned this, it was a really poorly thought out plan.
Now you could say that he just planned to take the money and had nothing after that thought out. He might have thought she would protest and then just be too scared of him to yell or at worst they would get in a fight. Possible, but he didn't have to kill her...just incapacitate her for a while then leave. I don't get the killing part if it was just a theft.
I think she tripped his trigger somehow...either figuring out who he was and maybe taunting him a bit or she did peek into his laptop. I really don't see that being too far out there. Maybe she wanted to log into Facebook and note her winnings...found some other stuff on that computer. I am not saying she went there to snoop on him and get access to his computer. The savage beating though seems way more than he would do for stealing a thousand dollars. Hell, she would have given him the money after the first hit with that tennis racquette.

Vincenzo good points. It seems like the police is ready to close the case because the police sent the case to the prosecutor. Apparently this is what happened:
They met at the casino, they had a few drinks. She gave him a ride in her jeep to his hotel where they went to his room at about 5:20 am. He took some pills (amphetamine) prior to that to be able to be up during the night for the poker tournament. He tried to have sex with the victim in his room but she rebuffed him by saying she was a lesbian. Both of them went to sleep until about 8 a.m he then got up and went out to a restaurant to buy some cakes and two espressos. When he return he saw her checking his laptop and hell broke loose. He grabbed her by the neck and beat her to death.
He was going to use one of his suitcases to get rid of the body but was afraid to be caught by the hotel employees for trying to leave without pay (this supports my idea he spent all the money).
So then decided to shower and changed his clothes because I am pretty sure they were all bloody.
Also according to Fox News a wrapper from a date-r-pe pill later was found in the victim's abandoned car.
It's so hard to believe the story but he spoke with his mom who convinced him to tell the truth but even if convicted, he would probably get 15 years or less.

Oh wow, Sleuth was right all along. The police is saying he lied during the confession about the girl checking the computer. His plan all along was to rob her and I suppose it makes sense because he didn't have any money to pay for the hotel.

It seems it will be longer than that Vincenzo, I remember at first they said the girl was stabbed to death, then that she was beaten with a baseball bat and after that the racket.

After spending a little time in Peru's most infamous prison, Joran says he is willing to say exactly where Natalee Holloway's remains are...IF they transfer him to a prison in Aruba.
