Yes, he is. Elder Uchtdorf had a very interesting life, full of challenges of many kinds. Elder Holland wrote a nice biography about him, sharing some of those challenges. Here is one, feel free to check the link and comment:

President Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was the speaker at the fireside originating in the Marriott Center on the Brigham Young University campus. Besides the several thousand college-aged young adults attending there, many more participated via the Internet and satellite broadcast in Church meetinghouses and other locations throughout the world. SALT LAKE CITY - Gov. Gary Herbert and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and five others were presented with the Bronze Minuteman award Wednesday night by the Utah National Guard. Ref. Source 4
Pres. Uchtdorf salutes U.S. Military personnel
President Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was the featured speaker at a special military fireside held in the church's Draper Utah Stake Center. The event drew members of four branches of the military. In addition to the chapel congregation of more than 1,000, some two dozen personnel deployed in Iraq - where it was 3:30 a.m. - viewed the fireside proceedings live via the Skype service over the Internet. A live scene of those gathered in Iraq was displayed on a screen in the chapel throughout the meeting. Ref. Source 1
