I read your blog, and remembered you wrote awhile back about your basement pump not working too well. Is that fixed now to deal with the problem?

Yes this new sump pump is a different design and it is working real well. As long as the electricity stays on. smile.gif

That is like poetic death because in the case of a storm or other disaster electricity usually is one of the first to go. Better attach a chain and bike pedal to it just in case.

Since I moved in back in 2003 the house I live in has lost power only once for an extended period of time. That was about two and a half hours. I know no pump can keep up with over four inches of rain falling in less than half a hour. I need to create a drain in my back yard to funnel more water away from my house.

The thing with disasters is that they usually happen once and it is that one time that causes all hell to break loose. Soon as you get a chance you better round up some of your sons and get that dug before the swamp in your backyard turns into a dam.

Well with the floods of 1993 and then the floods of 2008. Now we are having it again. If this keeps up we will have another flood event in less than ten more years. smile.gif

Is most of Iowa flat land? I've always said that it is better to live on a hill / mountain but I guess where you are at there isn't much choice. There is a structural technique here of building on concrete columns to prevent flooding inside a house but I've never seen this applied in the US.

There are parts of north central Iowa that are flat but where I live it is very hilly. Most of my home town is built on top of a hill. My house is level with the second floor of the elementary school a little ways down the block.
