Parents have to realise that dogs, like their wolf ancestors, abide by the law of the jungle; that is, only the strong will survive and the feeble will perish. In spite the fact that some dogs are known to be very good with children, their behaviour should be regarded as unpredictable and you never know what they might do, when the adults are not around. Dogs are intelligent enough to recognize that kids are helpless and vulnerable and this, unfortunately, makes them an easy target for the dog to attack, maim or kill. What parents need to do is, forget about the fact that the dog is gentle and has been a part of the family for many years. The child should be your top priority and you should not be allowing an animal to babysit or play with your child alone. Monitor the dog very closely whenever he is close to your child. Or maybe, you should wait for your child to become a little older, before having a dog in the house. Just my opinion.
My youngest stepson had his ear partially ripped off by a dog even when the parents and the dogs owners were right there. The dog was jealous that he (son) got a cookie and the dog did not.
Dogs can be very unpredictable even with the owners being right there. Lucky for us he is no longer scared of dogs. It happened with he was 2 also.
