Miracle Run

Miracle Run

Has anyone seen Miracle Run? It is a movie about a single young mother who has twins that are autistic. I love the opening grocery scene.

QUOTE
The social stigma and discrimination of autistic children is present in the movie Miracle Run. The life of Corrine Morgan-Thomas, the mother of autistic twins Steven and Philip, changes drastically when she finally finds out that her sons are autistic.

Run Miracle

As a mother with a high-functioning child with Autism, this movie touched a lot of my concerns, I felt identified a lot with some of the challenges this mother went through. Some points to highlight:

1. The inability to communicate or communicate properly (verbal/non-verbal autism) has nothing to do with being mentally retarded (as many people may think). Autistic children are highly intelligent, they just don't know how to communicate that intelligence.

2. Sometimes as a parent, you try to protect your kid at all cost (scene when one of the boys start running and the mother wants to follow him with her car). She knows she has to let it go and just take a chance but is hard knowing that your kid may have a meltdown in the middle of the road.

3. Some Autistic children are gifted, but just because they are... does not mean they will be able to have the same opportunities than an average gifted kid without Autism. Communication and certain changes must take place for them to adapt and show that gift. (examples: Boy over the phone auditioning, and red laces on trees for the other boy to not get lost while running).

4. Not all teachers, school boards, nannies are willing to work with kids with Autism. Ignorance is the number one reason.

5. Kids with Autism, CAN learn if given the chance. Some comprehend faster than others but both can reach the same level if given the opportunity.

6. The most touching part of the movie (last part): When one of the boys at the dinner says that his brother and him never had any friends because they did not know how to make friends but because of the love of their mother they are here today.

What did I learn between many other things watching this film? That no matter what doctors tell you is the prognosis of your child, he/she can become anything he/she wants to be IF he/she has the right help, resources and your love and support. If you are blessed enough to live in the US, check for ALL the rights your kid has to improve the quality of his life. Autism is not the end. There is hope AND there is achievement.
