Mormon Sperm Donor

Do you think that an LDS man would be in the wrong to become a Sperm Donor? Now before you answer consider:

1. We have a Topic about the LDS View on Artificial Insemination, but this Thread is not about that yet, as first the consideration of being a donor is first questioned.

2. Also, the argument in that Thread is between a married couple. In this Thread a Sperm Donor could be either single or married.

3. In the Old Testament the brother of a deceased husband could 'lend' his sperm for the greater good oh his deceased brother.

Oh, this is a difficult question. You have a way of asking them, JB wink.gif
Let's imagine we live in a world where all people are members of the Church. Then we couldn't just leave the donating of sperms to non-members. This is either wrong for every one or no one. Not just for the members. I only have my feelings to back up my answer to this question, which is: Yes, I believe it would be mostly wrong for an LDS man to donate sperm.

Having children is primarily a privilege given to a married couple. Those having trouble getting pregnant may be assisted as discussed in the other thread about artificial insemenation. I feel it's wrong for any single woman to just have this done by any given donor. The question becomes somewhat puzzling though if the husband in a marriage is the "problem". I'm not sure if a donation by his brother would be appropriate. They could adopt a child instead.

No clear cut answer, but a very good question!

I like to jog the brain here and elsewhere. I agree about single women persuing this, but I do not want to make this about the prospective mother as much as the man, since he is the only one that can donate sperm wink.gif. Recently, on Oprah they were featuring this subject and these points came up:

1. The children from donated sperm later had a real desire to seek out their biological father.
2. These children seemed a bit hurt by the whole concept.
3. The men who did it were usually young and needed the money at the time, so in other words they did not want to be 'father of all nations'.

I feel if we were in Old Testament times then this may not be an issue, but society today is so complexed and it is not a good thing for any of the brethren of the Church to get involved with this.

The Church discourages the use of sperm in single women or married ones who use sperm bank technology instead of their husband. In the Family Proclamation says:

QUOTE
...We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan." ....

It is my opinion that a single man in the Church should not become a sperm donor since he is not going to use it within the bond of matrimony. Same applies to a married man if he does not intent to use his sperm within his marriage.

I couldn't agree more, LDS! The family proclamation was once again a topic in the worldwide leadership training, brought to us via satellite yesterday.

I'll answer this indirectly, with all the children need adopting why would you want to be a sperm donor? I know I can get a whole bunch of answers with "duh", but that's just how I feel.

I don't think there is a simple answer to this question. I think it would depend upon each circumstance. It does not appear to be correct for an LDS male to just randomly donate his sperm to an anonymous sperm bank. Seems pretty reckless actions with the lives of potential children born of that sperm.

I do think there may be circumstances where it would be appropriate, after thoughtful prayer and soul searching, for a man to donate his sperm for the purpose of a lawfully married couple to conceive who have been unable to do so otherwise. Not just any random couple.

I agree that there are so many children needing adoption but that is not for everybody. This is something that needs to be carefully thought out. Prayed about. Perhaps even discussed with ecclesiastic leaders.

Comments: This is a tough topic. A very emotional topic. My wife and I have been trying to have children for a couple years. 6 months after we were married I was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma cancer. I went through treatments and though I survived my ability to reproduce did not. I have struggled with the decision to use donor sperm rather than adoption. As I am still in school adoption seems almost impossible. Searching through databases for sperm has been a new low. I think that It would be easier for me knowing that one of my brothers in the gospel was the donor. At least its not some punk kid from southern California who just needs money to pay for dope or surfing supplies or books for that matter. I found this [site] looking for an LDS donor but I don't think that will be an option.
