Today children live and seldom die in modern countries in childhood and is partly why smaller families started say from 12 to 4 or 5. The Biggest reason is today we want our toys are are not willing to do with out. Yes we are now more self centered then ever and as such parents will not give up all to have children. The second big reason is we are much older when getting married and having the first child ... was a big influence with myself. So it might be many would love to have bigger families but can not thus ridicule the one who do make the sacrifices required to do so.
