What The Heck? Casual Cursing By Teens Is Rising

QUOTE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Adolescents and preteens are swearing more publicly than ever - especially at school, experts say.
It's conversational swearing - in the hallways and in the classroom - that is on the rise, says Timothy Jay, one of the leading scholars on cursing in the United States.

Teens are more likely to drop casual expletives, or "fillers," than the generation before them and have more trouble adjusting their conversation to fit their audience. That means adults - especially strangers who cannot sanction the teens - hear more of the same language that the teens' friends hear, says Jay, author of "Why We Curse" and "Cursing in America."

He estimates that the average adolescent uses roughly 80 to 90 swear words a day

As teens in the world today--do you find this is true? And when referring to swearing, does this include "substitute" words that people use instead of the "real" ones?

There is nothing surprising about this, it has been this way for years.

Swearing and cursing by teenagers, even adults has been common place for years. The problem that you find is that as teenagers hear their parents and other adults swearing all around them, they're bound to pick it up and think it's ok for them to do it.

I think at least if they are using 'substitute' words it's not good, but at least they are making an effort to refrain from cursing.

Rising Teens Cursing Casual Heck What

There is no cursing at my home at all. As a matter of fact, I don't know how to curse. When I learned English, I didn't want to learn the "bad words" because once you learn them and use them it becomes a bad habit. I know some words but I find them so strong and crude that I never used them.

"It's conversational swearing"? Swearing does nothing but make you look like an idiot without vocabulary. Most of the people I know that do it just believe that casually spitting out swear words makes them look cool, but far from it because instead of using the appropriate adjective they swear. That's 'f-ing' nice, that's 'f-ing' cool and all that rubbish.

Comments: Hi, I'm 15.

I know, it's sad. The world's turning more profane...

I think that many teens liking swear words so much, especially "f***" don't know they're immature. They just do it out of the same old issue - peer pressure. At least most of the time. On the inside they're just cowards who seem so scared of the goody-goody-two-shoes concept. If I'm really infuriated inside I do swear, but only using my brain to scream it out. tongue.gif

Teens are swearing because its the "playground" language its how they communicate. They use swear words very strongly to communicate to people, otherwise they just want to be cool. I have been mocked of because I don't swear, but I don't mind because their mouth is dirty!
