Welcome to the land of plenty

Sometimes we beat up on ourselves as Trinidadians and Tobagonians as having the least of ideas, things and opportunities that those who will be visiting our shores for the summit have already. Ref. Source 8

Americas The Summit

Fox news is reporting that Obama and Chavez met again today and that Chavez gave Obama a book. Can you shed any light on this JB?

Summit Of The Americas Caribbean / Tobago & Trinidad

Not much other than Chavez seems to be 'extra' nice with Obama. I think Obama at times does not know how to take it really since Chavez claimed that this Summit will be with a focus against the United States. I've been hearing that Obama shaking hands with Chavez puts the US in a bad light, but I don't see how. Its not like Obama can be undiplomatic and pull away his hand from Chavez.

Saturday's conference had very little media coverage because the media was reportedly rushing on the Heads of State and had to be removed.

Bolivia's President continued t rant to the media after / before the Saturday meeting saying that he hoped that this would be the last Summit without Cuba.

Obama: Don't blame America

While he worked to ease friction between the US and their countries, Obama cautioned leaders at the Summit of the Americas to resist a temptation to blame all their problems on their behemoth neighbour to the north. [..] ...Obama reached behind several leaders at the summit to shake Chavez' hand for the third time. Obama summoned a translator and the two smiled and spoke briefly.

Both the T&T/US bi-lateral and the Caricom/US meetings occurred soon after the Summit's opening ceremony on Friday night. Browne said both meetings in total lasted "about an hour, an hour and a half" and confirmed Manning attended the multilateral meeting between Obama and the Caricom Heads of Government. Ref. Source 2

Americas The Summit

It seems like those who were "inside" the whole thing describe the summit as a disaster!

QUOTE
The Fifth Summit of the Americas has come and gone, and after all the pomp and ceremony, delegates and foreign journalists have come to one conclusion: it has been a mess. After going to five Latin American countries, earlier this month, to whip up support, Prime Minister Patrick Manning was the only leader to sign yesterday the document, the Declaration of Port-of-Spain.

At the end of the Summit retreat at the Diplomatic Centre yesterday, Manning described it as a "compromised" document which met the approbation of only some delegates. The T&T Prime Minister added: "Therefore, what we agreed to do today is to adopt the document. And in adopting it, we are recognising that there was not unanimity, even though there was, indeed, consensus on this very important matter." Manning said the leaders agreed that he, as chairman of the conference, should sign the document, "which is a task that I was very pleased to carry out."

No other leader signed the declaration. The signing was expected to be one of the highlights of the historic summit. The document outlined a hemispheric agenda which included human development and environmental sustainability. Before the summit, several leaders, including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, stated that he would not have signed the declaration, in protest of Cuba's exclusion from the Summit. At the end of the retreat yesterday, there was supposed to have been a final photo session of all the leaders. One photo session was carried out successfully on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency. Yesterday's session did not come off.

Several leaders took their places on the front step of the Diplomatic Centre, in front of their name tags. But US President Barack Obama could not stay. He was hosting a news conference at the Hilton Hotel; Bolivian President Evo Morales had already gone to Piarco Airport, and Chavez could not be found. Leaders simply left and headed for the airport. Another issue was accreditation. Residents of areas within the zones-red, yellow and blue-were never able to access the passes promised to them to leave and return to their homes. Some had to take chances leaving their homes, and depended on the kindness of security officers...

Learn from your counterparts, Mr PM

Prime Minister Manning's opening remarks at the summit were offensive to me in two areas. The first occurred when he attempted to make fun about the hunger strike undertaken by President Morales of Bolivia by offering him corn soup and doubles and the second when he referred to President Obama as the first of his kind to hold the Office of the President of the USA. Chavez: Summit almost perfect

"It all ended as it should have. A new atmosphere has been created throughout the continent. The encounter was an entire success that led to a set of tacit commitments and others expressly defined ... Of all the summits that I have attended in this decade, without doubt this was the most successful, one that opened the doors to a new era of reasoning among all countries," President Chavez said as the summit came to an end. Violent overthrows of democratically elected leaders will not be supported by the United States, the country's President, Barack Obama, said yesterday in response to claims by Bolivia President Evo Morales that Americans are behind a plot to kill him. Ref. Source 3

More interesting things that happened during the Summit:

1. The Canadian Prime Minister and President Obama from the US reached a the same time in Trinidad but the Canadian Prime Minister was asked to wait until Pres. Obama leaves the plane first.

2. The same day the President from Argentina arrived, her mom had a stroke. It wasn't fatal, she is doing all right.

3. A Special Branch officer and an officer attached to Argentina's President, were involved in a fight apparently because the local officers wanted the security officers for Argentina to go through some other place instead of accompanying the President. Words were exchanged and a fight erupted. The Argentine President witnessed the incident and reported to the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Patrick Manning.
