Browne denies summit cost $1 billion
It will take at least another two weeks before the final cost to taxpayers of the Fifth Summit of the Americas is tallied, says Trade and Industry Minister Mariano Browne who chaired the Cabinet sub-committee on the event. Ref. Source 6
The Prime Minister announced yesterday on television that the government spent $350 million dollars in the Summit and there is another Summit coming up in November (Commonwealth Heads of Government). Total budget for both Summits is 630 million.
He was also asked about his mention of the corn soup by Curepe Junction and he stated that it is part of the culture, nothing to be ashamed of.
Is anyone surprised that the summit was a flop/ I heard that only Patrick Manning signed the agreement and no one else. So much for, "to make money, you have to spend money." I saw the Summit on television and I was particularly interested in what our Prime Minister had to say. One of the Prime Ministers went on a hunger strike and of course, Mr Manning thought it was clever of him to make such a tasteless joke about inviting the gentleman to eat doubles from Debe. One would have thought that Mr Manning would exercise diplomacy on this forum but no such luck folks!
This is a good one. I am surprised at myself that I forgot to mention this. Did anyone notice the foreign opera singer who sang our National Anthem? Could someone please explain to me why Mr Manning thought it would be best to hire someone from abroad to sing our very own National Anthem? I wonder if he is familiar with the name, Bernadette Scott, the Lydian Singers or the Love Movement? I guess the locals are not good enough for him to sing our own Anthem! How sad!
