The death toll is upwards of 1,600! Form what I heard on the news its a lot of elderly people because most of the rural areas of Japan has all the aging people. The whole thing is so sad.

The death toll is quite likely to go above 10,000 as entire towns have been washed away. Getting food and clean drinking water to many in the area of the earthquake has been extremely difficult as the only way in and out of some areas is by helicopter. To add insult to injury, temperatures are expected to drop significantly today and that area may be hit with freezing rain.
