Do you know how to Cork Screw in order to get out of currents? It involves spinning and making breast strokes at the same time to move you from the center of a river to the sides.

I know how to do it it is not that easy if the current is string but it can still be done. You may still find yourself a couple miles down river or just a few yards depending on how far out into the current you were. It is a learned stroke

Beowolf, if you are a natural swimmer then it is likely that you can do this if you are shown, but if not then you will need to practice for sure because as KNtoran said, the currents are pulling you in the direction you do not want to go.
