US missile hits toxic satellite
A US missile brings down a disabled spy satellite, whose return to Earth had been said to pose a health threat.

From what I have heard this was more of a test than a attempt to destroy the satellite. The fact that the missile was targeted to strike the fuel tank of the satellite instead of the main body was a clue. The fact that they actually hit it as planned is even better. I think this did two things. One it shows that our guidance systems have pin point accuracy and two send a message to all other counties that we can take their satellites out with no problem.
The US has had the ability to shoot down satellites since the mid 80's. It was done from an F-15 platform. They even shot down one satellite. The program was cancelled in 1988, but I am sure it never really went out. Before that the plan was to take them out with an EMP from a nuclear warhead, and the military did that in the early 60's. If course this wouldn't destroy it, only make it non-functional.
This is a new platform and it was pretty cool to see that they were able to take it out with extreme accuracy. Obviously there was a double motive. The US military is all about training, and there are not a whole lot of skeets up there to shoot at. This was a great opportunity for the Navy to practice.
There is a space war that everyone is becoming 'excited' about, this little event is just a way for the U.S. to say, "Don't forget we are here and we are capable". Things like this make us the leaders in the world whether you believe it or not.
