If there is a job you definitely know you want in the future, you need to make your current manager aware of it. They will be able to tell you if that move is possible. Once you know that, you can also know what skills that next job requires. This is also good for a promotion within your current job if that is available. The thing I like to do is make sure that my objectives for this year allow me to get some of the requirements for the next position or advancement. If not, then I challenge my manager to provide me opportunities for advancement. This has worked out really well for me in the past and others that I have shared it with. I always tell them to look at their manager more as their agent.
