My family is the same way. For me it is the fact that pie or cake is easy and cheap to make and we do it better then most restaurants. Last thing I need after a nice meal is to dig into a corn starch filled blueberry or raspberry pie. Just ruins the whole experience.
Homemade is ALWAYS better. When I do order a dessert in a restaurant it is usually something that is a specialty or takes a lot of effort to make and so I would rarely make it myself. Or creme brulee' (I can always find room for that).
