Have you ever been on a train? It is fun at time, but boy cannot be very boring if you are not in good company, but at least there is more room for movement unlike a plane. Some people are so fanatical with various trains that they have whole collections and replicas.
Trains (Hover)
i've been on several different train rides myself...they are pretty fun.
my dad however is a train fanatic...he's crazy over them. one of his friends owns a model train track that has mountains, hills, cars, signal lights...all that stuff along with like 10 different model trains, 3 of which run at the same time on that huge track!
now that is pretty sweet.
Trains are awsome. I have'nt been on them altogether that much, but whenever I did ride one it was pretty fun.
Yeah I agree that it would be good to have someone with you to talk to, but if your going through a senetic (<--Spelling?) area it wouldent realy be needed. At least for me...
Model trains are awsome to, I remember when I was a little kid that we had a small train track. Its broken now, but I had alot of fun with it back then.

I was on a train once when I was around 14, many, many years ago. From what I remember it was nice because I could get up and walk around easier. I didn't get to see much since we traveled at night. I would someday love to take a train tour of America. Amtrak has some lovely tours available, but the closest Amtrack station is in St. Cloud which is about 70 miles from where I live. I would also love to travel on a train such as the Orient Express, I just think they seem so elegant.
Answering your questions:
1 how local trains differ from express trains and high speed trains: high speed travels on almost straight lines, very well designed rails (200 miles per hour on bullet train in France)
2 how can I tell if a train is a cargo or a passenger train: Passenger trains have windows, cargo trains does not.
3 how electric trains differ from diesel and steam: Diesel/Electric trains are the most effective ones, they have generators connected to the diesel engines (engine produce power that the electric motors on the wheels use it); only electric trains pick up the power from an electric line hanging over the cars or from the rails, generally are for locals (subway is an example)
4 what type of brakes are used in trains: all the trains now use air breaks, the steam trains use steam or air; the pressure of the gases push an piston and the piston locks the wheels on the cars.
5 what type of tracks are used on railroads: most of them are 4' 8 1/2" gauge.
6 what are the telegraph wires near to the railroad for: they transmit signals to the lights that control the traffic of the railroad. On the old times was for an telegraphy (steam engine times) that you could operate on board or on the little stations that served water and coal for the engine.
7 why railway crossing signs look like an x: road intersecting railroad"¦simplified
8 is the elevated train similar to the subway train: yes but the power pickup is above the train instead on the tracks"¦but most of the subway train travel outside also, like in new York and Washington DC, they only travel under ground part of the way.
Trains always brought the nostalgic living in the past feeling to me. You can walk through the cars and hang out at the bar for a while. Then watch the people smile and wave at you as you pass by on the train. It is a great source of travel if you have no car. It is also cheap to take a train.
