How you get them to SHUT UP!

Of course we all have different ways of helping our children be quiet. Here are the most common. Feel free to comment about methods you have used effectively over the years.

I have to take two aspirins because there is no way Felipe can shut up when he starts to cry!...sometimes the sweet works but sometimes nothing works! of course if there is a nice snack to eat probably he would stop wink.gif

How you get them to SHUT UP! Reviews Consumer & Travel Family Culture

I would pick up my child and hug her.  Sometimes she would cry, just because she couldn't sit next to me or reach something that she couldn't reach.  But sometimes, she would just cry just to be crying.  I would just pick her up and hug her or hold her.  Sometimes, she just wanted to be comforted.

When I think of children being quiet I think more of my boys, ages 6 and very 3. Sometimes they get so excited about something that they will interrupt conversations others are having. My husband and I have been trying to teach them that this is very impolite, and that people must take turns when talking. If it's an emergency, though, they are to try to wait until the person who's talking stops, then say, "excuse me." After they are recognised they may speak.

Then there's just general noisyness- boy, we sure get a lot of that around here! wink.gif When I've had my fill and need a few moments peace I tell them that we're all going to have a contest to see who can be the quietest. The winner gets a small prize- a penny, a little piece of candy, choice of the day's snack, something like that. My ears may only get a 5 minute rest, but that silence is golden. smile.gif

Whenever my 8 month old cries, I go to her and tries to get her attention to something else like maybe playing with her or reading to her. She usually just stops crying. Her cry is more on attention cries right now but when she doesn't stop, i pick her up, hug her and dance her around. She also usually will stop crying when I take her outside or when I go out for a walk with her. Sometimes she just needs some change of environment. I heard alot about not picking your child too much or it will spoil them but it is just hard not to be able to comfort her right away when she is crying. I just want to give her all the love I can give especially that she is still a baby.

How you get them to SHUT UP!

I saw this programme yesterday on the Dr Phil show, entitled "Cranky Kids." In this particular episode, Dr Phil tackles a common headache for all parents: what to do when your child throws a tantrum. He explores different ways to communicate with your child, understanding your child's behaviour and how to calm a child. Here is a link for this episode, on the Dr Phil show:

I was perusing the Dr Phil Website and I came across "Five Techniques to Calm a Crying Baby" and I thought that it was interesting and others may wish to take a look at it:

Alcohol works very well to calm a crying a child. laugh.gif

When mine were being noisy I would just calmly ask them to go to another toom or shut the door to their play area. It worked usually. The hardest time is the winter months when they can not get out and play. IF the weather was nice they were outside more often than not playing on their swing set or with their toys. Now that I live across from a elementary school they have a whole big area to play in. It gets quiet now and at times I miss all the loudness.
