Chewing gum rude to the Lord? How? What about someone napping, reading, updating their Palm, or anything else where the mind and heart are somewhere else. There are many things members do during church that show irreverence. Chewing gum is not one of them. If someone chewing gum bothers you, maybe you should check where your mind is at during meetings.

In the eternal scheme of things this is a small incidental issue, that has nothing to do with right or wrong.
I consider this as one of those cultural commandments that people have created, that is Mote. There are plenty of Beams out there keeping us from fully enjoying full fellowship with the Lord, to worry about what others are doing in church.
See Matthew 7:3-5

Comments: President Joseph Fielding Smith said that even chewing gum in sacrament was considered irreverent, he also stated that whispering was irreverent. Sacrament meeting is the closest we can get to the temple when we renew our covenants by taking the sacrament. I found the answer to this question in a Book of Mormon manual I have at home.
If you want a discussion of things that are irreverent during Sacrament then how about:
Cell phones! Before movies start, they tell people to "please be courteous to others, and turn off your cell phone." Let's do this at Sacrament as well. I"ve been to too many Sacrament services where a cell phone rings, even during the passing of the Sacrament. I think this is sad.
Crying babies, or other disruptive children, if you have a disruptive child, then bring him/her out of the service until they calm down.
