In Defense Of Food

In Defense of Food: Author, Journalist Michael Pollan on Nutrition, Food Science and the American Diet

Acclaimed author and journalist Michael Pollan argues that what most Americans are consuming today is not food but 'edible food-like substances.' His previous book, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, was named one of the ten best books of 2006 by the New York Times and the Washington Post. His latest book, just published, is called In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto.

I would agree somewhat with all the processes that many of our foods now go through we are getting less healthy foods unless we want to shell out the extra money and buy organic. Here where I live I tend to go buy my meat products from a farmer who is butchering a cow or hog. That way I tend to get fresher meat. But I still spend a lot of money on processed food too. And they wonder why americans are getting more and more unhealthy.

That sounds like a wonderful book! It's very true, most of what americans eat today is not really food. Just look at the label and see how many ingrediants you recongnize! It's quite scary, but it is not common practice to give children hot dogs or mac and cheese for a meal. What ever happened to fruits and vegetables? And speaking of fruits and vagetables, most of what is bought in stores are grown on land that has been SEVERLY overworked, meaning that the land does not have the correct balance of natrual vitamins and minerals to make the foods very healthful at all, add that to years of pesticides both externally on the food and soaked up into it through the soil and you've got to re-evaluate that apple's value! I would highly recommend going organic in everything you buy, yes it is slightly more expensive, but the value is like the difference of using brick to build your home, or card board!

Going organic may eliminate some toxins but is really that much healthier as much of it is grown from the same genetically altered seeds from the best that I can understand.

Are some brands less altered then others? Or perhaps I am mistaken in this thought.

I think better to the point is quit eating the processed foods organic or not. want cereal make a nice bowl of porg....rolled oats for oatmeal not quick oats. Buy unrefined whole wheat flour that the weevils live in not the whole wheat flour that they starve in.

Do not buy any canned foods period as they are full of preservatives.

I think that is the message here. I am fortunate like KNtoran my cousin has an active farm I buy from him and it is even cheaper then most stores. A butcher charges by the pound to kill and cut the meat. So find some one local and get a group together to buy your meat be it chicken, turkey, or beef.
