Before toilet paper was invented, French royalty wiped their bottoms with fine linen.

Fine linen as toilet paper is even more fancy than the modern wealthy will do without looking ridiculous. I could not live in medieval times just knowing I might have to go out in the cold to use an outhouse and some leaves as toilet paper.
