I think that too many people go out in the wilderness or campgrounds located in a remote area and think that the forest critter are tamed and not very close.
It comes down to the lack of knowledge and respect for where you are. Camping in the deep bush is fun many unspoiled lakes but take some courses on how to pack your food and clean up the camp site so as to not attract undesired beasts. Also learn about the animals found in that area and how they will respond to you if you happen across them.
Do you make noise? Do you stare them down? Should you avoid eye contact? Do you cower and move to the side?
We must learn how they communicate not the other way around! Your life might depend on it.
As a side point the same goes for all the nice day to day pets that we meet. I am baffled how people misinturpret a dogs body language and then invade their pace and end up bit! Hey guess what it was not the dogs fault it was yours!

Animals who have never seen a human do not fear them!

The worst thing about wolves is they operate in packs so you can be attacked from multiple angles. It is also very hard to outrun a wolf. No one should go on any camping trip alone, at least three people as an absolute minimum is the safest course.
