People with schizophrenia account for more than one in 10 suicide cases. A new study shows that people with schizophrenia account for more than one in 10 cases of suicide in Ontario, and that young people are disproportionately affected. People with schizophrenia also had more contact with the health care system, pointing to an opportunity to intervene. The researchers emphasize the need for early suicide risk assessments to reduce risks. Source 4u.

Brains of people with schizophrenia-related disorders aren't all the same. A new multi-site brain imaging study shows that sub-groups of people use their brains differently when imitating emotional faces -- a task that reflects their ability to interact socially. Interestingly, individuals with schizophrenia do not have categorically different social brain function than those without mental illness, but fall into different sub-groups that may respond to different types of treatments. Scientists have suspected mutations in a cellular cholesterol transport protein are associated with psychiatric disorders, but have found it difficult to prove this and to pinpoint how it happens. Now, researchers have provided evidence that mice with disrupted ABCA13 protein demonstrate a hallmark behavior of schizophrenia. Ref. USAToday.
