Your a conditional employee of the county library and you are just about to get to the end of your 6 months evaluation time. A guy comes into the library and starts surfing child porn on the web. What do you do? Well, Brenda Breisterfeld called her supervisor. Sounds good so far. Brenda's supervisor told her to give the perv (library patron) a message telling him to stop surfing child porn. OK. Brenda suggested calling the police and her supervisor told her not to. This is where it gets hairy. Brenda was apparently bothered by the perv (library parton) and decided to visit the police station the following day during her lunch hour. The police told her to call if she saw the guy doing the same thing again in the future. Luck had it that the perv came back for a afternoon matinee on the library computers...police called and perv charged! Yeah!
2 Weeks later...Brenda is jobless.

Now, the library does contend that she was fired for other reasons and that may or may not be true. However, I do know that when you tell the newspapers that your supervisor apparently is not too upset about child pornography, I am sure it has a negative effect on your job evaluation.
All that aside...what would you have done?

Well me being who I am I would have walked over to him and asked him if was researching something for college. If not I would have told him that he may want to get his own computer because these computers are monitored and if he continues to surf these types of sites the police would be notified. I would not have notified my supervisor till I had talked to the person. IF that got me fired then I would just find another job. We do not need these types of people on public computers ding this type of activity when there are families with children present.
First off, I would hope that there is a policy already in existence about these kinds of users, so there will be no need to wonder aimlessly as to what should or should not be done. My first instinct will be to immediately approached the person and ask them to explain what they are doing. Judging from reaction you can usually tell how 'seasoned' the person is in their vice. After that I would inform my supervisor / boss as to what is taking place while at the same time recommending action, and if I met with such ridiculous conclusions as was given in the first Post then I would say "Shove it!" (referring to my job). Who would want to work in a place where something as disgusting as child porn was 'allowed'.

My first instinct would be to confront him fast and hard. The boss would have known my thoughts on the topic as would have every one in ear shot.
I am not easily embarrassed so my discussion would be forth right and to the point with both of them.
I am unsure sure if I would have called the police or not. I do know I would have thought about it as an after thought most likely far to late for any real charges to be made. I just shudder at the thought of my wife catching anyone any where doing such an activity. They would be severely marred from her beating verbally and likely physical as well.
