Defending Helpless Individuals

If you were a witness to: (I) a group of male teenagers (ii) a group of female teenagers (iii) a group of kids (boys and girls ages 9-12)
tormenting a mentally challenged man or a handicapped man in a wheel chair, what would you do? Would the age or sex of the bullies, affect your reaction to this situation?

My first reaction to this question was.... "are you kidding me?"

My first response to the situation would be to smack someone over the head.

My first rational response would be to wonder whether I could be sued by smacking someone over the head.

Regardless... this type of behaviour is becoming more prevalent in the modern age, and it can be something as simple as barging ahead of an older person in a queue.

And I don't blame the teenagers... I blame the parents.

I would say something to them regardless of age or sex. I would ask them to think about their actions and what they would do if someone like them was harassing one of their family members who found themselves in a like situation.

I think parents play a big role on how a child acts towards someone less normal than themselves. IF they are acting in this sort of bad behavior they had poor parenting.
