I think the free will is the important key to who is the most powerful. As that allows the soldier to complete his task in the diversity of the battle field.
The fighter pilot does jump at me at first but he is also very exposed to heavy fire and attacks by his equals.
Perhaps the task at hand might determine who is more important at the time. After all what good is a plane to ferret out a lone soldier causing havoc in a hilly landscape. But what does the lone man do against a completely outfitted Tank regiment.
Could it be neither is more dangerous but that they are suited to different tasks.
A lone person might be the hardest to track and kill does that make him more dangerous? I think it does.

Yes trying to track one person compared to many is a lot harder. They have more places to hide and more ways to ambush those who are tracking him. At the same time a lone person will find it harder to get out of harms way if they find themselves behind enemy lines.
You are correct in saying the lone soldier and the fighter pilot have much different roles to play out. All are equally important as the fighter pilot wins the air it gives their ground troops less to worry about an air based attack.
I agree with KNtoran. I also think the free willed soldier is the best. The soldier on the ground is always the most powerful because without him- what's the point of the war. Infantry is always the most important, they are in the street more amount of time than any other, fighting the enemy, making peace with the civilians. As in the Marine Corps ideal- The grunt is the tip of the spear, everything else is to back him up.

What is going to make it very interesting is the new suits they have in development. Having a metal ectoskeleton on the troops that allow them to carry a lot more weight and be just as mobile if not a little faster. This can allow them to get more weapons or rounds to be able to fight on their own a lot longer before needing to be reprovisioned.
The Iron Man suit will be the next big step is my bet. Weapons built in the techogeek knight is soon to be reality is my thought. Electronic disrupter built in big guns able to attach with ammo compartments.
What a ground trooper really needs is an magnetic impulse that takes out enemies electronics and leaves them sitting disarmed and in the dark.

I do not know if the magnetic impulse is a sound technology. It sounds good on paper and works ok in the limited lab tests but out in the real world will it work like they say it will? That is a matter to be seen and tested completely. I am not not convinced by it as it is today.
I think it has far to go but coming fast technology is the weakest yet strongest part of modern warfare.
