My favorite potluck dishes contain potatoes. I love just about anything that contains potatoes!
I once had a cheesy grits dish that I wish I had gotten the recipe for, it was so good.
My favorite desert dish has to be strawberry shortcake. Someone once made homemade rootbeer once and that was a favorite of everyone in attendance! The kids especially liked the dry ice that was used to carbonate the beverage!
I also like the people that bring in the unique dishes to the potlucks. I don't always like them, but I do like trying new things and where better to try them than at a potluck so you can get the recipe afterwards!
Which gives me an idea, I think everyone should bring a copy of their recipe to a potluck so others can get it right away! Also, it would make it better for individuals who have food allergies. You could see right away if a food has an ingredient you can not eat. These days you really have to worry about that. It seems like everyone has a food allergy!

I like the different varieties of pastas that people come up with for potlucks. I am also a fan of chillis, especially here in Minnesota during the cold winter months. Minnesotans are known for their unique recipes where they combine a lot of leftover and come up with 'dishes', like tater-tot dish, or something to that effect. It's always interesting eating those, and trying to figure out what's in them.

I have not heard of potlucks before, it seems we may be missing out on something good!
Maybe I can start a new tradition over here---it sounds like it could be a fun night!
At any rate, I'm taking in the suggestions for the different types of food, thank you!
A potluck is an "anything-goes" type of event where people bring in all kinds of dishes, not necessarily linked by any themes. It's really an excuse for us in the US to get together and eat. In the UK, you probably have those kinds of gatherings and refer to them differently. Either way, they're a great way to learn new recipes, and try new foods.
Hi Malexander, thanks for the explanation, we don't have anything like that here as far as I am aware.
Our old Church sometimes did something similar to this for lunch after the service, they could it 'bring and share' and everybody brought something different, it was really amazing how many different food types were brought.
I haven't seen or heard of anything else like it anywhere, maybe I should patent the idea here -just joking , but it does sound really cool!
We are having a potluck in June in a Church activity. I usually enjoy it because you can taste all kind of different foods. In Argentina we do not call them by any particular name, we just say to bring anything you want to share that is usually the same thing as a potluck.
My favorite potluck is anything with potatoes like angbart said, I just love potatoes with plenty, plenty, plenty cheese on them! *yummy*
Potlucks are great, but I always use a little caution when eating because, unfortunately, not everyone is careful with preparing their food -- or even using fresh food, for that matter. I've had my share of stomach upsets after potluck dinners so that I stick close to things I know. I know people at church who will only eat jello, green salads, fruit, and things you can tell have been store-bought, to avoid getting sick.
Having said that, my favorites are potato and macaroni salad, fruit salads, chilis and soups, and mexican-style dishes like enchiladas. Yum!
