Seems China is boycotting certain people, banning from entering the country.

Olympic gold medalist and outspoken Darfur activist Joey Cheek has had his visa revoked by the Chinese embassy, hours before the speedskating champion was set to fly to China. And he wasn't even planning on wearing a mask when he got there. Chinese officials don't need a reason to revoke anyone's visa but, in their eyes, they had plenty of reasons to snatch Cheek's. He is the founder of Team Darfur, a group of 70 athletes whose goal it is to raise global awareness of the human-rights violations taking part in the Darfur region of Sudan. China's military, economic and diplomatic ties to Sudan have been well-publicized in the lead-up to the Games. |
Well, at least Bush is not afraid to let them have it, but at the same time... Letterman was right on this... they torture people, mutilate life and take away rights and we say... have the Olympics. Maybe there is something deeper here, maybe it is the first baby steps in getting China to open up and embrace liberty.

I think any diplomatic relations with China are specifically directed at that - someday forsaking these horrible policies against human rights. For China to desire to be in the spotlight in this way is a sign that they want to be seen in a different light, in my opinion. But they definitely have a long way to go. I just hope the games go on without any interruptions as far as terrorism or violent protests.
I believe there will be some demonstrations around the olympics but it will not be very news worthy. If there is a attack via terrorists then we may hear more about it. I doubt that this (the olympics) will change Chinas opinions and the way they handle things.
Perhaps it will serve to make better relations in the long long run. I am sure if any attacks are made China will try to cover the best they can but with the media coverage there I doubt it will get contained.
I pray that all will go well and no extremists get out of control.
Murder in Beijing! What a horrible thing to happen, and with no answers as to why this attacker would choose this family and then kill himself.

The US men's volleyball team briefly set aside their shock at the murder of their coach's father-in-law to record an emotional victory in their opening match of the Olympic tournament yesterday afternoon. Taking to the court at the Capital Gymnasium less than 24 hours after being told that Todd Bachman, the father-in-law of the coach Hugh McCutcheon and a familiar face to many of the team, had been stabbed to death at one of Beijing's leading tourist attractions, the Americans defeated Venezuela three sets to two. Bachman and his wife Barbara, the parents of McCutcheon's wife, the former US Olympian Elisabeth Bachman, were attacked while visiting the Drum Tower in the city on Saturday afternoon. Bachman died at the scene, and his wife was in a critical condition yesterday after undergoing eight hours of surgery. Their attacker, a Chinese national named Tang Yongming, killed himself by leaping from the second floor of the tower after the attack. The killing has prompted a security clampdown at tourist attractions across the city, and in a sign of the seriousness with which the situation is viewed, China's foreign and health ministers have visited the family in hospital to offer support. |
