Passover & Mormons
For 35 years, Brigham Young University professor of ancient scripture Victor Ludlow has re-enacted the symbol-packed Passover observance, teaching how it has evolved over the centuries and how it relates to Christianity and the Book of Mormon. The re-enactments are performed with a profound sense of appreciation and respect for Jewish tradition.

Would this be similar to a Jewish institution trying to follow the same procedure as an LDS Sacrament meeting. It doesn't seem proper to try to emulate something that another group of people find sacred.
If people are interested in learning about the Passover would it not be more appropriate to go to the source.

We do the passover each year in our stake for those who want to attend. This year it is part of the quad stake seminary bowl activity. It is very meaningful and is a great reminder of what the Lord has done in our lives. We have even had a rabbi administer it once. It is something that makes a great ward or stake activity.
Well we had the rabbi that serviced the Jewish group at Ohio State come in to the institute and he spoke on the passover and he went a ahead and did a Passover Sader for us. Of course we had to substitute some of the wine and stuff like that, but it was a good experience. It was done one evening night not on passover itself, but a night a week or so before passover. I am not sure if you could get just any rabbi to come and do it, but the rabbi that was at OSU at the time was very flexible to such things, because the School interfaith associations are very good at sharing there faiths. I know that I have heard of other LDS groups do similar things. We have a pretty active LDSSA at OSU. In fact next week at the Catholic church on campus 2 BYU professors are speaking at a Mormon catholic interfaith event.
Let me show my ignorance for a second. Is the passover in the Jewish faith a religious ceremony or is it a secular tradition based on a secular event? Could it be both?
The reason I ask, is that if it is strictly religious are we not taking on practices of another religion and incorporating them into our own activities, thus corrupting what we perceive to be a higher law (the law of the sacrament) and marginalizing the significance of their sacred tradition. Is not the higher law, which is performed by authorized servants of the Lord sufficient. And is not the passover as performed in Synagogues around the country significant
If the Passover, as presented by jewish Rabbies, available already in the religious enclaves of judaism, why do we need to present it through LDS eyes.
I love the Jewish people, as can be seen in the posting that I have posted in response to their current political struggles. That is one of the reasons that I am leary of this activity, The Passover as it is now practiced is strictly a Jewish tradition, and it is somewhat disrespectful of us to try to market that tradition.
Rather off topic, but... Dr. Ludlow also charges 17 dollars for BYU students and 25 dollars for the general public. If the Passover is so Sacred why are people being charged to partake in a religeous ceremony. |
