My mother always read to me growing up, I remember many books clearly that I never read myself. I remember one of my favorites was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, she would read a chapter every night. I also passed this on to my children. My wife was not read to when she was a child, but my kids get read to every night by her. Now, since my oldest child is beginning to learn, he reads a chapter from "The Adventures of Dick and Jane" and then she reads a short book like Fox in Sox or some other great book for kids. They look forward to it every night and are disappointed if they can't get a story because we were out late.

I read a short story at bed time for my kids, they choose the book themselves, and enjoy doing this, it's normally a book about cars or a nursery rhyme book.
I did this too with my eldest son who is now 17, and since being little has always been an avid reader, he always chose the Bible to be read to him, and I would read a few verses a night to him, completely his own choice, and would enjoy the time that we spent together reading.

I think that it encourages children to want to read and enjoy their own books, and find this to have been invaluable.
